Support for Renee Unterman’s Child Exploitation Bill

Support for Unterman’s child prostitution bill from the AJC Kyle Wingfield:

Studies of Georgia’s child sex industry indicate that these children often are trafficked. A Future Not a Past, a statewide project of the Juvenile Justice Fund, says half of the girls prostituted in Georgia are brought here from another state.

Add the safe assumption that some Georgian children are forced into prostitution, and it’s clear that a majority of these kids are sex slaves.

Treating the children as victims does not diminish the criminality of pimps, gangs and “johns” exploiting them. Their roles will remain illegal, and police will still have reason to intervene in these situations. If the bill needs to be altered to make that clear, so be it.

For her part, Unterman argues that her bill would aid the prosecution of exploiters.

“It’s much easier to take a child into custody and put them into a secure, therapeutic facility and get them to talk to us,” she says. If you first handcuff children and throw them in jail, on the other hand, “they’re not going to rat out that pimp.”

Speaking personally, what’s most disappointing here is hearing such loud opposition in the name of Christianity.

Umbrella groups oppose the bill, but coalitions of churches are begging legislators to act. They’ve also formed organizations like Street Grace to help sexually exploited children. My family’s church is one of them.

Another participant is North Avenue Presbyterian Church — which, statistics tell us, sits amid a hotbed of child exploitation. While pledging to work with others to resolve differences on the legislation, North Avenue’s urban ministries coordinator, Phil Cobb, says the imperative is to help the victims.

“In Scripture, and in the Christian faith, there is a theme of justice, and providing a voice to those who are victims of injustice is a clear theme throughout the Bible,” says Cobb.

“For us, once we found out this was happening, we felt like we had no choice but to answer the call.”

President Obama continues, with the help of Congressional BOZOS, to spend, spend, spend his way out of recession. He continues to look at the tarp money as his own personal slush fund. He continues to think that deficits are for others to worry about (like our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren).

President Obama, look where this thinking has taken Europe. Ireland, Greece, Portugal and Spain are all in danger of bankruptcy; big government Nanny-States that can’t rein in their deficits. They, like you, think they can spend their way out of a crisis.

Unlike your trio of financial advisors, Geithner,Volcker and Summers; I beg to differ. Spending your way out of debt is a moronic concoction of misguided progressive thought. It wouldn’t work for me as an idividual and it CERTAINLY won’t work for the United States government.

Mr. President- Do you ever wonder what it’s like to live in Zimbabwe right now?

Some Suggested Budget Reductions

After hearing today about the enormous expenses incurred by the House delegation to Copenhagen, I have a few suggestions to reel in Budget Expenses.

TERM LIMITS- For both Senators and Representatives

STAFF ALLOWANCE- Reduce Congressional Staff Allowance by 50%

CONGRESSIONAL PAY- Reduce Congressional pay by 10% and tie pay to performance by placing pay increases on the ballot every four years, nothing is automatic.

LEGISLATIVE SESSIONS- Eliminate the outdated need for shortened work weeks or extended recesses. Work fulltime, for a change!

FEDERAL EMPLOYEES RETIREMENT SYSTEM- Eliminate your special treatment, merge it into Social Security and abide by your legislated retirement package.

FARM SUBSIDIES- Stop paying farmers NOT to grow.

INCOME TAX/ IRS- Establish a Value Added Tax in place of, not in addition to Income Tax and eliminate the IRS.

CONGRESSIONAL JUNKETS-Although I see NO reason for these mini-vacations forPublic Servants on MY dime, require Congressmen to pay for staff expenses out of their Staff Expense Budget. If spouses or children want to attend, that expense should be paid out of the Congressmen’s own pocket!

The American Taxpayer should not be required to foot the bill for every Congressional whim.
